It can be quite a task to build a chicken coop especially if you have not built one before. Do not worry you are not the only person who does not know how to build a chicken coop. For first timers with the help of a few instructions and things to keep in mind it can be as simple a task as any.

The most important advantage of building a chicken as compared to buying a readymade one is the cost. A readymade chicken coop is extremely expensive. The plan of the coop is extremely essential and with that you can very easily build a coop using less materials and effort. With a readymade coop not only do you pay for the materials used by them but also for the time, effort, overheads and various other costs involved in making and hence pay a higher rate.
Building your own chicken coop with proper planning and correctly is required only if you intend to raise chickens for a long period of time. If the coop is not built well then it can get easily damaged by a storm or heavy rains or a hurricane and in turn you could lose some chickens. Similarly a fox, raccoon or wolf could also access the chickens easily. A really good chicken coop could keep these nature calamities and animals at bay and safeguard your chickens.
While choosing a plan for the coop keep in mind the number of chickens you will keep in the there and also the type of chickens. Similarly choose the materials for your coop. If you are raising only a few chickens then you need a small coop whereas if you plan to raise more chickens for the purpose of collecting eggs then make a large coop convenient for roosting also.
Getting materials is the next step once you have figured out the type and size of coop that you are going to need. You can get materials for the coop from a local lumber shop. Alternatively you could just go through the scrap materials of a manufacturing company to see what you find and buy the missing stuff. A local lumber shop would have inexpensive materials but if you really want to cut costs then you can visit the nearest manufacturing company for parts they don’t need like packing material or pallets. There are a lot of sources for good material and it is up to you to choose what you want.
